Is Your Child Potty Trained? What You Need to Know Before Starting Preschool

One of the most common questions we get from new families is:
“Does my child need to be potty trained to attend Little Steps?”

The answer is yes—and here’s why. Potty training is a big developmental milestone that supports your child’s independence, classroom safety, and comfort. But don’t worry! If you're still working on it, you’re not alone. We’re here to support you every step of the way.

Why We Require Potty Training

At Little Steps Preschool, our classrooms are designed for potty-trained children ages 3–5. Here’s why that matters:

  • Safety and hygiene: Accidents can disrupt learning and require one-on-one attention that pulls a teacher away from the group.

  • Promoting independence: Preschoolers are ready for routines like using the bathroom, washing hands, and pulling up pants with minimal help.

  • Smooth transitions: Being potty trained helps your child fully participate in classroom activities and outings without stress.

What “Potty Trained” Means to Us

Your child should be able to:

  • Communicate when they need to go

  • Use the toilet with little or no help

  • Manage clothing independently (e.g., pull pants up/down)

  • Wash hands after using the bathroom

We know occasional accidents happen, and that’s okay! We just ask that your child is generally consistent with toileting during the day.

Tips for Parents Still Working on Potty Training

  1. Start when your child shows readiness signs (like staying dry for longer periods or showing interest in the toilet)

  2. Stay consistent at home and in any care environments

  3. Use positive reinforcement, not pressure or punishment

  4. Dress your child in easy-to-remove clothing (no tricky buttons or overalls!)

  5. Make it a routine—encourage bathroom trips after meals and before leaving the house

We’re Here to Support You

If your child is almost there, we can offer guidance or refer you to local potty-training resources. We want every child to feel confident and capable when they walk into our classrooms.
